Land and homeowners will have the opportunity to learn more about woodland and wildlife management at the annual Ohio River Valley Woodlands and Wildlife Workshop March 26 at the Boone County Enrichment Center in Burlington, Kentucky. 

A tri-state project covering Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio, the event will consist of over a dozen 45-minute sessions aimed to educate the public about various aspects of land ownership. The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, with The Ohio State University and Purdue University will host the workshop. 

“Many landowners are looking for assistance when it comes to managing their woodland,” said Laurie Thomas, extension forester with UK Forestry and Natural Resources Extension. “These workshops provide a great opportunity for them to meet experts from the three universities on a whole array of areas.” 

Topics include how to plan and construct trails, identify trees, design monarch habitats, manage forests for songbirds, as well as combat invasive species and develop a practical plan for woodland safety. 

“We’ve found this has been a really good training event for woodland owners trying to manage healthy forests,” Thomas said. “People have given us some great feedback on things they have learned from these workshops.” 

The event also offers a breakfast for attendees made exclusively from Kentucky products, such as venison and maple syrup.
