Kentucky has more than 50 species of mosquitoes, and with the arrival of warmer weather, mosquitoes and other pests will return. In preparation for that return, mosquito experts from the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and the American Mosquito Control Association will host an educational program for children and adults about mosquitoes and other insects.

The program, which will be geared toward mosquito control, will be from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. EDT March 30 at the Explorium in Lexington.

During the program, participants can take part in many hands-on workshops and science experiments to learn about all aspects of mosquitoes including biology, life cycle, surveillance, control, beneficial insects that attack mosquitoes and ways to prevent mosquito bites.

In addition, mosquito experts will teach participants about things they can do at their homes to prevent mosquitoes. Adults can get an update on mosquito diseases and the status of disease control in Kentucky.

"We want to get the word out about mosquito control and give people information so we can help them help themselves," said Logan Minter, UK entomology doctoral student who is organizing UK's portion of the program.

The UK Department of Entomology will display their insect zoo as part of the day's events.

The program is free with admission to the Explorium, which is $6 per person. The Explorium is located at 440 W. Short St. in downtown Lexington.

The program is an educational outreach of the American Mosquito Control Association and is occurring during the group's international meeting in Lexington.
