This past summer, the University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment received a transformational gift from the Bill Gatton Foundation. One of the goals of this gift is to develop a companion animal program.

“Mr. Bill Gatton appreciated and personally understood the importance of the human-animal bond,” said Nancy Cox, vice president for land-grant engagement and dean of the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. “He also recognized the college’s unique interest in the power of that bond.”

In honor of Mr. Gatton’s interest and in keeping with his gift’s intention, the college is working to attain national prominence in the field of companion animal studies. 

The college recognizes that there are many individuals and units in the university already working in this space. 

The survey below is intended to assess current companion animal work being done at UK by its faculty and staff members. Individuals interested in companion animals and scholarly work in this field are also encouraged to complete the survey. 

Following this data collection, the college will develop a companion animal working group that will:

• Build capacity for enhanced programs by assessing the national landscape.
• Solicit planning grants for this area.
• Create a road map for future investment.
