The Ohio River Valley Woodlands and Wildlife Workshop will be held April 2 in Madison, Indiana. The annual workshop provides an array of forestry- and wildlife-related educational opportunities to help woodland owners get the most from their properties.

Sponsored by the Cooperative Extension Services of University of Kentucky, Purdue University and The Ohio State University, as well as the Indiana Forestry and Woodland Owners Association, the one-day workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. EDT at Clifty Falls State Park. Purdue will host this year’s event.

Terry Conners, Doug McLaren and Ellen Crocker will represent the UK Department of Forestry. Conners will teach the basics of wood structure and how to identify more than a dozen of the most common types of wood. McLaren will take the mystery out of tree identification. Crocker’s session on mushrooms will cover the “what” and the “why”, and how to identify them.

Other concurrent sessions will include such topics as raptors; managing aquatic plants and algae; providing habitat for pollinators; honeybees, trees and beekeeping; identifying and controlling invasive plants; tree galls; thousand cankers disease in black walnut trees; reptile and amphibian management; prescribed burning; and an introduction to the web-based tool, My Land Plan.

Clifty Falls is a one-hour drive from Louisville or Northern Kentucky, and two hours from Lexington. Registration is $45 per person prior to March 21 and $55 after that date.
