Horticulture Field Day Aug. 7
Horticulture Field Day Aug. 7
From traditional to organic fruit and vegetable production, the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture Horticulture Tour will have something to interest just about anyone.
The UK Horticultural Research Farm in south Lexington is home to dozens of projects and variety trials, many of which the tour will showcase from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 7. Tours will begin every hour and last about 45 minutes. The tours will highlight vegetable and fruit production, biofuels, grapes, high tunnels, ornamental production, equipment for vegetable production and UK’s organic community supported agriculture program
"We will be able to show visitors our latest research and hopefully give them some ideas of things they can do themselves," said Tim Coolong, assistant professor of vegetable production in the UK College of Agriculture.
Coolong said tour participants will have a chance to learn about research involving traditional and sustainable/organic growing practices.
The field day is open to the public but is aimed at fruit and vegetable growers. Cooperative Extension agents may earn two continuing education credits for attending. Lunch will not be offered, but organizers will have refreshments for visitors. For more information, contact your local county extension office or call Coolong at 859-257-3374.
The UK Horticultural Research Farm is located on the south side of Lexington approximately one block west of the intersection of Man O' War Boulevard and Nicholasville Road (U.S. 27). The entrance to the farm, 4320 Emmert Farm Lane, is off Man O' War Boulevard at the traffic light opposite the entrance to Lowe's and Wal-Mart. If severe weather threatens, the field day will be cancelled and no make-up day is planned.
