LEXINGTON, Ky., — In July, “From the Woods Today” is going to explore oak ailments, bird feeder disease, mushrooms and much more. The University of Kentucky Forestry and Natural Resources Extension’s weekly webcast is a spinoff from the original radio program, “From the Woods KY” that recently won the Gold Award for Podcast or Radio Program from the Association of Natural Resources Extension Professionals. The webcast offers relevant and interesting information about woodlands and wildlife each Wednesday at 11 a.m. EDT.

The program streams on Zoom, Facebook Live and where podcasts are available. Hosts Billy Thomas and Reneé Williams, UK extension forester and information specialist, respectively, welcome UK specialists who share their knowledge of Kentucky’s forests and the creatures, plants and fungi that call them home.

July’s episodes include:

July 7: Ellen Crocker, UK assistant extension professor of forest health, will discuss what might be bothering oak trees, with “What’s Wrong with My Oaks,” and Matt Springer, UK assistant extension professor of wildlife management, will talk about a mysterious bird illness that has appeared in a few areas of the state and how homeowners can help slow the spread.

July 14: Co-host Thomas will present management options for woodland owners, and UK forest health technician Megan Buland will focus on the fascinating world of forest mushrooms.

July 21: Crocker, Springer and Thomas will return to lead segments on laurel wilt, identifying snakes and a preview of the upcoming Woodland Owners Short Course.

July 28: UK entomologist Jonathan Larson will join the team to discuss the always rich topic of beneficial bugs. Crocker will continue her segment on pesky plants.

Laurie Thomas will introduce the Tree of the Week during each episode.
